524-Year-Old Tripura Sundari Temple Reopens by PM Modi

Udaipur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the redeveloped 524-year-old Tripura Sundari Temple at Udaipur in Tripura’s Gomati district. Known as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the temple now stands in a grand new form under the PRASHAD scheme.

PM Modi reached the temple after landing at Agartala’s Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport. Where Chief Minister Manik Saha and Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu welcome him. At the temple, traditional dance performances greeted him before he offered prayers with CM Saha and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee.

The redeveloped complex is spread across multiple levels. It now has wide lobbies, 86 stalls, multipurpose halls, a Prasad ghar, dormitories for visitors, and living quarters for monks and volunteers. The main temple hall, or naatmandir, is located on the top floor, surrounded by five sacred water bodies. New ramps and lifts make it easier for senior citizens and differently-abled devotees to access the shrine.

The temple, shaped like a tortoise hump, was first built in 1501 by King Dhanya Manikya after receiving a divine command in a dream. Inside, devotees worship two idols — the main deity Goddess Tripurasundari and another idol known as ChhotiMa or Goddess Chandi.

Since coming to power in 2018, the BJP-led state government has pushed major plans to make this site a big spiritual hub.Former CM Biplab Kumar Deb set up a trust for its development. Earlier this year, CM Saha also laid the foundation for the 51-Shakti Peethas Park near the temple. Which will soon showcase replicas of all Shakti Peethas — the first such park in the Northeast.

With PM Modi’s inauguration, the centuries-old Tripura Sundari temple now blends history, faith, and modern facilities — making it a landmark destination for pilgrims across India.
